Dianchang Road Primary School has been offering winter sports for the past three years in line with China's push to drive more interest in cold-weather sports ahead of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. About 300 students each year get to experience a variety of sports – from ice hockey to cross-country skiing, speed skating and curling – often for the first time.

The goal is not necessarily to create champions, but to get young people interested. The school's equipment, including laser biathlon rifles and targets, cross-country skis and boots, and heavy curling stones and brushes, is government-funded or donated by sports associations.

Students often show off their skills enthusiastically with a hockey stick or on roller skis. Feedback from parents has also been positive, with many pleased that their children get some physical exercise. As the 100-day countdown to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics begins, Dianchang Road Primary School is already in full Olympic regalia. Around the school, large banners advertise the Games and Winter Olympics-themed student artwork adorns the hallways.
