Glossy Ibis reappears in the Dianchi Lake

1

Recently, members of the Yunnan Wild Bird Society photographed a Glossy Ibis in the Dianchi Dongdahe wetland in Jinning district, Kunming city. The Glossy Ibis hasn’t been photographed since January 21, 2017, when 10 Glossy Ibises were first found in the Dianchi Lake.

Glossy Ibis is also known as Plegadis falcinellus within the scientific community. It is national second-class protected animals and Chinese Red Data Book of Endangered Animals once declared that it extincts in China since it hasn’t been observed for many years. Because of habitat loss and environmental pollution, Glossy Ibises are now on the verge of extinction, and their population is even less than their close relatives Crested Ibises which are first-class national protected animals.

Because the Dianchi Lake management has achieved good results in recent years, providing a good habitat environment and sufficient food source for wild birds. An increasing number of wild birds begin to visit the lake and surrounding wetlands.
