Rare bird greater coucal is found in Weishan, Yunnan

Recently, greater coucal, which is a national level II key protected wildlife and belongs to 2012 red list of endangered species proposed by International Union for Conservation of Nature, has been found in Weishan county, Yunnan province. Some staff from the Management Bureau of Qinghua Green Peacock Provincial Nature Reserve in Weishan found them when patrolling the reserve. This is the first time to find greater coucal in Weishan.

The greater coucal or crow pheasant (Centropus sinensis) is a large species of cuckoo at 48 cm. The head is black, upper mantle and underside are black glossed with purple. The back and wings are chestnut brown and the eyes are ruby red. It takes a wide range of insects, caterpillars, small vertebrates, bird eggs, nestlings, fruits and seeds.
