Thailand's business sentiment falls in January

Thailand's business sentiment fell in January, dragged down by the non-manufacturing sector, while the manufacturing index also remained in worsening territory, data released by the central bank showed on Thursday.

According to the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the Southeast Asian country's business sentiment index (BSI) was recorded at 48.0 last month, down from 49.1 in December 2023, due to lower confidence in most aspects, particularly the cost component.

The non-manufacturing index dropped in almost all businesses, especially in the trading sector, as total order books' confidence plunged significantly after peak sales periods during the New Year's holiday season, the BOT said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing index stayed below the 50-point threshold, indicating a decline in confidence compared to the previous month, the statement said.

The three-month expected BSI came in at 53.9 in January, unchanged from a month earlier, across both the manufacturing and non-manufacturing indices, the central bank said.

The reading was based on a survey of 768 respondents from large and medium-sized firms, the central bank said.
