On Oct 4, over 200 mu (32.94 acres) of rice were in the full harvest at Baofeng Wetland Ecological Agriculture Demonstration Area of Guandu District in Kunming. On a sunny day, farmers were busy harvesting while roaring combine harvesters moving back and forth in the rice fields.

When you entered the rice planting base at the Baofeng Wetland, golden rice came into your sight. Under the sunlight, waves of heavy ears of rice were swaying with wind. What an enchanting harvest scene!

According to the person in charge of planting management, it was the first time to grow rice on a large scale in the fields at the Baofeng Wetland. Last year, they did a small-scale trial planting. Early this year, Qishan Agriculture Company introduced high-quality rice varieties with the support of Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. They carried out large-scale planting and put 12 tons of local fish in paddy fields simultaneously with a double harvest of ripe rice and adult fish.

Yuan Pingrong, an expert at the food crop research institute of Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that Baofeng Wetland Ecological Agriculture Demonstration Area had planted more than 200mu (32.94 acres) of rice this time, which is the closest paddy field to the main urban area of Kunming. There are two excellent rice varieties called “Yungeng 37” and “Yungeng 50” with each planted in an area of about 100 mu(16.47 acres). The high-end fragrant soft rice processed from these two varieties is very popular in the market.

He added that the paddy field is the largest artificial wetland. We are committed to protecting Dianchi Lake by preventing sewage from running into our Mother Lake.
