Lao leaders discuss key national strategic priorities

The 12th Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) convened its third plenary session to review key national issues, including socio-economic development, state budget and monetary plans, as well as strategies to strengthen rural development and reduce poverty.

The three-day session, held from Tuesday, was chaired by Thongloun Sisoulith, general secretary of the LPRP Central Committee and Lao president, and attended by members of the politburo and the central committee, Lao National TV reported on Wednesday.

The meeting is reviewing key issues, including achievements made during the first half of 2026 and priorities for the remaining months of the year. Discussions are focusing on the implementation of socio-economic development, state budget, and monetary plans for the first six months of 2026, along with strategies for the second half of the year.

Participants are also considering a draft report on grassroots political development, rural development and poverty eradication. Rural development and poverty reduction are expected to be elevated as national agenda priorities.

In addition, the session is deliberating on a draft resolution aimed at combating abuse of power, corruption, negative practices and extravagance within the state and society.

In his remarks, Thongloun stressed that national development and improving people's living standards remain the Party's historic mission in the new era. He emphasized that development must be sustainable, resource-efficient, and people-centered, while ensuring that citizens benefit fairly from economic growth.

He urged Party members to enhance their political responsibility, contribute constructive opinions, and help refine policies to ensure the successful implementation of the goals set by the 12th Party Congress.
