China-Laos-Thailand-Malaysia International Freight Train Set for Inaugural Run This Week

On November 24, the Department of Transport of Yunnan Province announced that the inaugural ceremony for the "Kunming Dry Port" · "China-Laos-Thailand-Malaysia: Anning–Perlis–Kuala Lumpur" International Multimodal Train (hereinafter referred to as the "China-Laos-Thailand-Malaysia International Freight Train") is scheduled for November 28 at the Anning Taohua Village Freight Station. This new route marks another major destination for the "Kunming Dry Port" brand, building upon the success of last year's "Kunming Dry Port" multimodal freight train service from Kunming Anning to Ranong, Thailand.

With the strong support of the Department of Transport of Yunnan Province and other relevant departments, Anning City authorities have closely collaborated with logistics and trading enterprises, as well as the Kunming Institute of South and Southeast Asian International Logistics. Together, they have organized cargo, coordinated with railway and customs departments, and facilitated the launch of the China-Kunming Anning—Laos—Thailand—Malaysia (Perlis State, Kuala Lumpur) International Multimodal Freight Train. The inaugural shipment consists of sunflower seed products.

Industry analysts opine that the launch of the China-Laos-Thailand-Malaysia International Freight Train holds significant importance for Kunming. It serves to establish a new high ground for outward opening-up towards South Asia and Southeast Asia, and crucially advances the development of China's role as a regional center of influence for these areas.

According to relevant sources, the inaugural stop for the cargo in Malaysia is Perlis State (hereafter referred to as "Perlis"). Situated within the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand growth triangle (IMT-GT), Perlis boasts a highly advantageous geographical location. It is served by two railway stations: Arau Station and Padang Besar Station. Padang Besar Station, a crucial hub on the Trans-Asian Railway's middle corridor, functions as the border crossing between Thailand and Malaysia, with southbound connections reaching as far as Singapore. Currently, the first phase of the Perlis Inland Port (PIP) has been completed, featuring dedicated railway lines, container yards, warehousing facilities, and customs-bonded infrastructure. The planned Perlis Sanglang Port (PSP) will be developed into a 200,000-ton deep-water port, positioning it as Malaysia's western maritime gateway to the Indian Ocean. In the future, the PIP will form a significant port cluster with the adjacent Bamboo Valley Industrial Zone, Sanglang Port, and Penang Port. Industry experts believe that the launch of the China-Laos-Thailand-Malaysia International Freight Train will effectively link Kunming with Perlis, establishing vital trade routes to Europe, Africa, and West Asia.
