Pakistan on Sunday marked its 85th Republic Day, also known as Pakistan Day or the Pakistan Resolution Day.
The day is celebrated annually in memory of the Lahore Resolution which was passed on March 23, 1940, one of the major milestones in the struggle for an independent state.
The day started with a 31-gun salute in the capital Islamabad, and a 21-gun salute in provincial capitals while prayer ceremonies were held across the country for the nation's progress and prosperity.
A military parade was held at the President House in Islamabad, which was attended by the president, prime minister, custodians of the upper house and the lower house of parliament, chiefs of armed forces, diplomats and officials.
The national flag was hoisted high on all major official buildings across the country while people organized events, including rallies and seminars, to discuss the role of the Lahore Resolution in the creation of Pakistan.
On the occasion, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari extended his heartfelt congratulations to the entire nation, emphasizing that the same unwavering spirit that led to Pakistan's creation can serve as a driving force toward a brighter and more prosperous future.
The president called on the nation to rise above differences, reject division and negativity, and unite in the collective effort to build a prosperous, inclusive, and just Pakistan.
"Pakistan's greatest strength lies in its people, their resilience, dedication, and patriotism, which have enabled the nation to overcome its most challenging times," said the president.
In a separate message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that through the right policies, unwavering dedication, and national unity, Pakistan can attain economic prosperity, uphold social justice, and strengthen its standing among the nations of the world.
He stated that this moment serves as both a testament to Pakistan's collective resolve and a powerful reminder of the values of sacrifice and perseverance, principles deeply rooted in the foundation of the nation.
