Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved various government institutions to recruit nearly 7,500 people to fill existing vacancies, following recommendations from a committee reviewing public sector recruitment and staff management, according to a press release from the Department of Government Information on Tuesday.
On Dec. 30, 2024, a committee headed by the secretary to the prime minister was established to determine how many people have to be recruited to meet the requirements of various government bodies, the press release said.
Under the plan, the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government has been authorized to fill 3,000 vacancies while the Ministry of Health and Media has been authorized to recruit 3,519 persons, according to the department.
In total, 7,456 people will be recruited to the government sector, said the department.
According to official data, the public sector workforce is about 1.3 million, however, there are long-term vacancies in the sector especially in technical capacities.
Following the 2022 economic crisis, recruitment for the government sector was frozen, which led to many vacancies unfilled.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, cabinet spokesperson and Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa said the new recruitments are necessary to keep essential services functioning.
