The China International Friendship Cities Conference 2024 kicked off in the warm winter sun of Kunming. On the vast land of Southwest China, Kunming's unique charm is attracting global attention. During the conference, the diversity and inclusiveness of this city was once again the focus of attention.

Among the many guests who came from afar, Mr. Jordi Vaquer, Secretary General of the World Association of the Major Metropolises, an expert on urban governance from Spain, spoke highly of Kunming with his unique perspective and rich experience. In an exclusive interview, Mr. Vaquer said he had travelled to many cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou. It has been a long time dream to come to Yunnan, and his visit to Kunming this time has left a deep impression on him.

Mr. Vaquer came to Kunming for 2 days and found the climate very pleasant and the city very hospitable. During his visit to Dianchi Lake, he was captivated by the sparkling waters and soaring seagulls, describing this "Pearl of the Plateau" as an excellent leisure and sightseeing destination for both locals and international visitors. When speaking about Kunming, he highlighted four areas of interest: firstly, the ethnic diversity of Yunnan; secondly, the unique natural scenery of Yunnan, such as lakes and Stone Forest, as well as Kunming’s lush greenery and vibrant vegetation. Whether in the bustling streets of the city or the serene countryside of mountains and lakes, the region exudes vitality; thirdly, he would like to learn more about the unique culture of this place, including its architecture. He plans to spend the next few days in the city, and explore every corner of Kunming in the coming days, including Dounan Flower Market and the Yunnan Ethnic Village; and fourthly, to savor Yunnan’s renowned dishes, particularly wild mushrooms and rice noodles. Mr. Vaquer spoke with great enthusiasm about Kunming, saying, “Yunnan is like a melting pot of Asia, blending cultural elements from Southeast Asia, South Asia, East Asia, and beyond to create a truly unique cultural landscape. It is simply unimaginable that Kunming, Yunnan, China, could possess such remarkable diversity, vibrant greenery, and warmth—it is completely beyond expectations!”

Commenting on the geographical location of Kunming, Mr. Vaquer noted that the city, situated in southwest China, is not only a popular tourist destination but also a vital bridge connecting China to the world. Benefiting from its strategic location and efficient transport network, Kunming plays a pivotal role in linking China with Southeast Asia. The opening of the China-Laos Railway has further enhanced Kunming's accessibility, facilitating greater exchanges and cooperation with the rest of the world.

At the same time, Mr. Vaquer offered constructive suggestions for Kunming’s internationalization. He suggested that the first step should be to enhance the city’s hospitality capacity by providing more convenient facilities and comfortable accommodations for tourists. Additionally, improving the city’s connectivity by developing an efficient transport network would make it easier for visitors to reach Kunming. Most importantly, he emphasized the need to strengthen global promotion efforts. Kunming should actively market its international brand to boost its visibility and influence, allowing more people to appreciate the city’s unique charm and vast potential.

"I believe Kunming has immense development potential." Mr. Vaquer expressed high hopes for Kunming’s future, envisioning it as the jewel of Asia that will continue to captivate tourists and investors worldwide with its unique charm and boundless opportunities. He anticipates that Kunming will evolve into a premier year-round holiday destination and a dazzling gem on both the Asian and global stage.

The China International Friendship Cities Conference 2024 was held in Kunming, and amidst the praise and expectations of Mr. Vaquer and other international guests, Kunming welcomed friends from all over the world with a more open, inclusive and innovative attitude, writing a new chapter of urban development together. Kunming will continue to uphold the principles of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, and further enhance its international influence and competitiveness, becoming a shining bridge connecting China and the world.
