Napahai Lake Welcomes This Year's First Flock of Wintering Black-necked Cranes

纳帕海迎来今年首批越冬黑颈鹤

Recently, staff at the Napahai Lake Provincial Nature Reserve Management Bureau spotted 34 black-necked cranes within the reserve. These are the first group of wintering black-necked cranes to arrive in Shangri-La this year. Along with them, 2 grey cranes and 61 black storks were also observed.

Staff also discovered that four of the black-necked cranes in this group had remained at Napahai Lake throughout the summer. To better understand the population dynamics of the black-necked cranes, the Napahai Lake Management Bureau initiated a special monitoring program in 2023. The monitoring results indicate that the migration pattern of the cranes has shifted from the traditional saying "arrive by September 9, depart by March 3." The cranes now generally start arriving in late September or early October and complete their migration by May of the following year. Some black-necked cranes have transitioned from wintering to staying through the summer, highlighting the significant improvement in the wetland environment at Napahai Lake, which now provides an excellent habitat for the cranes year-round.
