At least 22 people were killed in rain-related incidents in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, official broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) reported Monday.
Due to severe waterlogging in the wake of torrential rains that hit the state since Saturday, authorities ordered the closure of schools on Monday in seven affected districts.
"At least 22 people lost their lives in different parts of Rajasthan amid torrential rains which have been lashing the state since Saturday. Heavy rain in Jaipur, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, and Dausa left the streets waterlogged yesterday," the report said. "Authorities have announced the closure of all government and private schools in Jaipur, Jaipur Rural, Dausa, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Gangapur and Bharatpur districts today."
According to officials, seven youths died due to drowning in the Banganga river in Bharatpur district. A person slipped and went into deep water at Kanota Dam near Jaipur, while saving him, four of his friends drowned.
The officials said about 10 other people died in rain-related incidents in different districts.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma who held a meeting with senior officials in Jaipur to take stock of the situation asked the officials to expedite relief work in the affected areas and take necessary precautionary measures based on the weather department's forecast for the coming days.
Sharma has also appealed to the people to take special precautions during heavy rains. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department issued an alert of heavy to very heavy rain in seven eastern districts of Rajasthan.
