A 6.8-magnitude aftershock struck off Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku on Wednesday, but did not result in giant waves, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.
The aftershock occurred at 08:02 p.m. local time (1302 GMT) following the 7.1-magnitude shock, which hit the province at 11:52 a.m. local time (0452 GMT), the agency said.
The location of the epicenter was 255 km northwest of Maluku Tenggara Barat (Tanimbar Islands) district with a depth of 45 km under the sea floor, it said.
The 6.8-magnitude aftershock centered at 244 km northwest of Tanimbar Islands district with a depth of 40 km under the sea floor. Its intensity was felt the strongest at III Modified Mercalli Intensity in Saumlaki town and the Banda Sea, the agency said.
As many as 23 aftershocks, most of which were classified as moderate level, have followed the main shock, it added.
A warning for a tsunami was not issued by the agency as the tremors of the quake would not leave giant waves.
So far, the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency did not find any damages or casualties, Sandhy Luhulima, head of the emergency unit, told Xinhua over phone.
