Sri Lanka's weekly fuel quota increased for festive season remains unchanged

Sri Lankan Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera announced on Tuesday that the weekly fuel quota increased for the festive season will remain unchanged.

Issuing a press release, Wijesekera said the decision was taken on Monday during a progress review meeting with officials of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

The minister said during the meeting that it was revealed that the increase in the quota has not affected the volume of fuel consumed by motorists.

With the increase in the fuel quota, the attempts at obtaining fuel outside the quota system have decreased, the minister said.

The minister further explained that prior to the increase in the quota, 24 percent of petrol disbursed by gas stations was sold outside the quota system, while the number was 28 percent for diesel.

Following the quota increase, these figures have dropped to 14 percent and 15 percent, respectively.

The minister added that the economic improvement was also a factor in the decision.

Sri Lanka increased the fuel quota earlier this month for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive season.

Sri Lanka introduced the fuel quota last year following difficulties in purchasing adequate quantities of fuel due to foreign reserve shortages.
