A “bridge upon bridge” in Qujing’s Xuanwei

Gexiang River is one of the largest rivers in Xuanwei, which belongs to the Pearl River water system. It has amazing scenery along its bank and cliff. In the valley, there is a magnificent “bridge upon bridge”, which is the traffic artery connecting Baoshan and Tianba towns and the main entrance from Guizhou’s Panzhou City into Yunnan’s Xuanwei City.

The lower bridge is a stone arch bridge 28 meters above the water with a span of 22.6 meters and a width of 4.6 meters. Its predecessor was a covered bridge built during the Tongzhi period of the Qing dynasty. It collapsed and was rebuilt as a stone bridge. Then it was destroyed by war and reconstructed afterwards.

In 2016, the third bridge, a reinforced concrete box rib arch bridge, was built on top of the “bridge upon bridge” with a span of 40 meters, a width of 9 meters and a length of 48.26 meters. Therefore, three overlapping bridges form a wonderful scenery.
