Malaysia reconvened its lower house of parliament on Monday, as the government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim seeks to pass the national budget for 2023.
High on the agenda are discussions and measures meant to curb the rising cost of living, an issue that confronts Anwar's government as the country moves to recover from pandemic-related economic disruptions, with the budget set to be tabled on Feb. 24 being expected to address some of these issues.
While the previous government tabled a national budget last year, the budget could not be passed as the country was heading to national polls on Nov. 19, 2022. As the previous government failed to win power following the election, Anwar was instead sworn in as the head of a unity government on Nov. 24, 2022.
Prior to the parliamentary session, Anwar also said the country's competitiveness, the speed of business approvals as well as several new initiatives, including digitization and sustainable consumption as well as production of natural resources in the downstream process, would be discussed.
Meanwhile, Malaysian King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah urged the elected representatives to ensure political stability and to ensure that Malaysia remains respectful, tolerant and united, in his opening address at the session.
"I have taken an oath to be true and loyal to perform with fairness and rule the country in accordance with the federal law and constitution," he said.
The session will run from Feb. 13 to March 30.
