The green peafowl, a rare bird, lives in the dense forests of Ailao Mountains, Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Chuxiong, SW China’s Yunnan Province.
The green peafowl is the only native peafowl species and the largest species of wild pheasant in China. Currently, it is only distributed in Yunnan Province. With a population of 555 to 600, the green peafowl is under first-class national protection and is listed as a critically endangered species. By the end of 2021, the number of green peafowl in Chuxiong Prefecture has reached about 300, nearly 50% of the national total, which makes Chuxiong Prefecture becomes the main preserve of wild green peafowl in China.
