Two species of birds first discovered in Dashanbao

Recently, the staff of Yunnan Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve  discovered two species of birds in Daya Cave. They were identified as Spot-winged Rosefinch and Black Bulbul according to A Field Guide to the Birds of China and ornithology experts. These two species of birds were first discovered and recorded in Yunnan Dashanbao National Nature Reserve.

Spot-winged Rosefinch (Carpodacus rhodopeplus) belongs to finches, Carpodacus, which can grow to 13-14cm. During the breeding period, the male birds have wide pink long eyebrows, dark pink throat, chest, and waist, with pale pink spots on the median coverts, greater coverts and tertials. The female birds also have longitudinal eyebrows light colored. The bird inhabits at an altitude of 3,000 ~ 4,500 meters, and can be found in northwest of Yunnan and Sichuan.

Black Bulbul (Hypsipetes madagascariensis) is a middle-sized bird, which can grow to 22-26cm, with bright red mouth, orange-red feet and forked tail. There are two colors of Black Bulbul, one is totally black, and another is black with white head and neck. Black Bulbul mainly inhabits on tall trees in forests at an altitude of 500-1,000 meters, which might change with seasons.
