India Metrological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday that heatwave spell was likely to continue over northwest and central India during next five days.
The current heatwave spell started mainly over west Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Gujarat state and west Madhya Pradesh from March 27. It further extended to east Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, south Haryana, Delhi and southern parts of Uttar Pradesh by March 29 with maximum temperatures recorded in the range of 40-42 degrees Celsius over most of stations in these states, said IMD in a statement.
The IMD predicted rise in maximum temperatures by about 2 degrees Celsius very likely over many parts of Northwest and Central India during the next three days and no significant thereafter.
The IMD warned that heatwave could lead to moderate health concern for vulnerable people like infants, elderly and people with chronic diseases.
"Avoid heat exposure --keep cool. Avoid dehydration. Drink sufficient water even if not thirsty. Avoid heat exposure, wear lightweight, light-colored, loose, cotton clothes and cover the head by use of cloth, hat or umbrella etc.," IMD suggested.
It advised people should take oral rehydration salts, homemade drinks, lemon water, buttermilk to keep themselves hydrated.
