Why is Kunming called “Spring City”?

The spring-like weather all year round is a natural calling card of Kunming, which makes Kunming well-known as “Spring City” throughout China.
But the average temperature in downtown Kunming from Mar.1 to Mar.21 hit a record high this year, which was 17.5 degrees Celsius, 3 degrees Celsius higher than that in the same period.
Does the obvious high temperature in March this year make the name “Spring City” inconsistent with facts? According to Li Xiaopeng, Director of Kunming Meteorological Station, it is only when the average temperature exceeds 22 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days in a region that it indicates it enters summer. Although the temperature in March is slightly higher this year, it is still within the normal range according to the monitoring survey.
“Compared with most of the cities in the country, Kunming has absolute advantages to be called the Spring City. Kunming’s suitable temperature in Summer is unmatched by other cities. The temperature between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius makes people feel comfortable in Summer”, said Li.
Absolute advantages of Kunming as “Spring City”
From June to August is summer, the average temperature is 20-22 degrees Celsius.
The annual temperature of Kunming was 16.8 degrees Celsius on average in 2021, 0.1 degrees Celsius higher year on year.
The average temperature of Kunming was 10.1 degrees Celsius in January this year, 1.2 degrees Celsius higher than the same period in history.
The average temperature of Kunming was 9.8 degrees Celsius in February this year, 1.7 degrees Celsius lower than the same period in history.
