Vietnam reports 16,725 new COVID-19 cases, 1,975,444 in total

Vietnam reported 16,725 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, including 16,700 locally transmitted and 25 imported, according to its Ministry of Health.

In the Southeast Asian country, the capital Hanoi continued to report the highest number of infections on Thursday with 2,968 cases, followed by the southern Binh Phuoc province with 726 cases and the central Binh Dinh province with 709 cases.

The new infections brought the total tally of confirmed cases of COVID-19 to 1,975,444 in the country, with 35,170 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 1,661,930 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered.

Some 164.5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, including 71.7 million second shots and 14.3 million third shots, have been administered in Vietnam, according to the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Thursday, the country has registered nearly 1.97 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in late April last year, the ministry said.
