Black pottery

Black pottery, born in the Neolithic Age of China, is one of the national intangible cultural heritage. Tangdui Village in Nixi Town, Shangri-La County, Yunnan Province, has a long history of firing black pottery. In February and March every year, the craftsmen in Tangdui Village will go to collect soil from mountains. After the clay is transported home, they smash them and store them in bags for the whole year. Using local unique clay is the key to success in making Nixi black pottery. From the beginning to the end, each piece of pottery must be made by hand with more than 50 pieces of wooden tools, and go through more than ten processes in turn. Because it is a handmade product, there are no two identical Nixi black pottery, which creates the unique artistic value of Nixi black pottery. With the help of the government and tourism booming in Shangri-La, the reputation of black pottery is continuously growing.
