Kunming is ranked 10th on the list of China's top 20 nighttime economy cities in 2020 issued by China Tourism Academy at the Night Economic Forum recently. The other cities on the list are Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Changsha, Nanjing, Xi’an, Suzhou, Qingdao, Fuzhou, Guiyang, Zhengzhou, Ningbo, Foshan, Xiamen and Wuxi. 

According to China Tourism Academy, China’s domestic nighttime consumption in 2019 was significantly higher than that in 2018, but it shows a trend of contraction in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The dynamic nighttime economy of Kunming

In Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan province, nighttime economy has always been prosperous. Kundu was one well-known place in the past and more popular spots have sprung out in recent years, such as Kunming Old Street, Nanqiang Street, the night market in Dounan, South Asia Plaza and so on. 

Nanqiang Street as an Internet celebrity is open until two in the morning every day, attracting large numbers of citizens and tourists by various special snacks and rich cultural activities. In the past Golden Week, it also provided people with plays and street concerts.  

A better Kunming after dark

Kunming Municipal Bureau of Commerce issued implementation opinions to promote nighttime economy in Kunming in August 2020. According to it, Kunming will spend 3 years to build 15 to 20 nighttime economic agglomeration areas, 3 special night tours, 10 night tour projects, 10 nighttime cultural projects and 10 nighttime sports projects. With all the efforts, the nighttime economy of Kunming may experience a better future.
