The village, located opposite to Jingmai Mountain, is an almost unknown land that few outsiders, visitors, and travellers enter. Its name "Panayang" originates from Hani ethnic people’s oral language, meaning all of the minority people are the the bravest, most intelligent and kind-hearted ones.
Old men of the minority also explained the name of the village in another way. They said "Panayang" is from Dai ethnic people’s language which means a line of beautiful girls standing on stocks. About one hundred years ago, a group of Hani ethnic people moved from Honghe Prefecture to Pu’er City, seeing the scene that took place. Hence they named their village "Panayang".
