Indonesia plans to use amphibian jet to combat illegal fishing

[InKunming--Sister Cities]  Indonesian armed forced or TNI will purchase amphibian jets and use them to fight illegal fishing in the country's water territory, military officer said here on Monday.

The plan was made as President Joko Widodo promised to protect the country's fish and other rich resources at sea from such illegal activities.

The use of the Russian-made amphibian jet was expected to solve the problem being faced by Indonesian navy in pursuing the foreign ships intruding Indonesia's waters for fishing and stealing other resources illegally, Air Chief Marshall Ida Bagus Putu Dunia said.

He said that one of the types of the amphibian jet was BE 200.

Bagus said that President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, has agreed with the plan.

Jokowi has ordered the navy and the officials at the maritime and fisheries ministry to sink ships stealing fish in Indonesia's territory following the rampant illegal fishing in the vast archipelago country, a chain of about 17, 500 islands, that has cost Indonesia huge economic losses.

The country's maritime and fisheries minister Susi Pudjiastuti has said that the capture and destruction of about 30 foreign fishing boats in past weeks was "only a first warning."

The president unveiled that more than 5,400 ships illegally exploit Indonesia's resources at sea every year adding that the country suffers financial loss of about 300 trillion rupiah (about 24.712 billion U.S. dollars) annually.
