Confucius Culture Festival to be held in Jianshui County from Sep. 27 to Oct. 2

Jianshui Confucius Culture Festival has been held continuously for 9 years since 2005.

[InKunming--Yunnan]  China Jianshui Confucius Culture Festival will be celebrated from September 27 to October 7 in Jianshui County of Yunnan Province this year. The festival has been successively held for 9 years since 2005. Based on profound cultural background, it has become a name card of Jianshui County, Honghe Hani Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province.

Jianshui County which is used to be an important educational center of the province has been strongly influenced by Confucian culture in Yunnan.

Jianshui Confucius Culture Festival aims at commemorating Confucius, who is considered as one of the greatest ancient Chinese sages. He was also the originator of Confucianism, as well as a great ideologist and an educator.

Opening and sacrificial ceremony will be held at 9:00 on September 28 in Confucius Shrine of Jianshui County.

Confucius Shrine of Jianshui County was built in the year of 1285 in Yuan Dynasty. Having stood in Jianshui County for about 710 years, the shrine is the first and biggest Confucius Shrine in the province, covering 76,000 square meters. It also ranks second for grand occupied area all over China. The shrine was evaluated as one of the national key cultural relics protection units for its important function on studying history and preserving historic architectures.

During the approaching festival, seven series of activities will be presented. Four activities of them, namely the purple pottery auction, gourmet street, bike riding race, painting and calligraphy creation on site, will be organized during the festival for the first time. Therefore, innovation would be the most prepossessing light spot of the festival this year.

Among them, purple pottery auction will surely highlight the festival. Purple pottery is a traditional folk craft that has prevailed in Jianshui County for almost 3,500 years since Song (AD 420-479) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties. Its working procedure includes preparing clay, decorating, carving and filling, firing, polishing. In 2008, Jianshui Purple Pottery was listed as National Intangible Cultural Heritage and Protected Geographical Indication.

The other 3 activities during the festival are the opening and sacrificial ceremony, purple pottery exhibition, and Three Rituals of Confucian.
