Yunnan firstly accomplishes genome map of moringa oleifera

[InKunming--Yunnan]  In a seminar about biological industry transformation, researchers of Yunnan Agricultural University published an elaborate genome map of moringa oleifera, which was the first genome map for moringa oleifera in the world.

"Moringa oleifera contains some ingredients that can help eaters to lose weights, regulate blood sugar, or counteract oxidation." A researcher on the seminar introduced some effects of the moringa oleifera, and classified the plant as a good example of healthy diet.

Yunnan has researched moringa oleifera for about 50 years. Before revealing genome map, moringa oleifera was always treated as a traditional plant. Until now, more than 20,000 mu of moringa oleifera are grown in Yunnan province, covering a relatively larger plant area in the nation.

It is said that 19,465 protein-coding genes were found in moringa oleifera by computer analysis, according to Yunnan Moringa Oleifera Research Group.

"After knowing these genes, we will breed new species of moringa oleifera which can be planted in various places of Yunnan province. Except for Zhaotong and Shangra-la, almost all places of the province have suitable climates and natural environments that are fit for growing Moringa Oleifera." said Sheng Jun, leader of Yunnan Moringa Oleifera Research Group.

"We are collecting seeds of moringa oleifera that are hidden around the world. After getting all these seeds, we can research moringa oleifera in different species and with varied functions. Industrial chain about moringa oleifera in Yunnan needs to be developed when its research results are accomplished." Sheng Jun told.
