Kunming's artistic bookstores warm city

[InKunming--Foreigners in Kunming] On the passed Third Independent Bookstore Summit Forum, many independent bookstore operators discussed about their bookstore's future development.

Many of them thought that although independent bookstores are deeply influenced by internet, independent bookstores still have merits to survive.

In bookstore-runners' opinions, their bookstores keep creating new ideas, which help them attract a large number of paper quality book readers.

In Kunming, there are still a few of this kind of independent bookstores.

Wheatfield Bookstore

Some paper quality book readers zealously recommend Wheatfield Bookstore(麦田书店) since it is as warm as someone's own book room.

The bookstore that is situated on Tianjundian lane of Wenlin street(昆明市五华区文林街天君殿巷,师大附小后门) in the city mainly sell paper quality books on literature and arts, humanities and social sciences, history and philosophy, film and music.

Ma Li, a young owner of the bookstore, always tries his best to select the best books from a vast sea of books.

After having been opened for over 10 years, the Wheatfield bookstore by itself has accumulated renown, with which young people from other provinces may come to Kunming for worshiping the bookstore in a special trip.

In the bookstore, some posters printed with literary masters and cultural experts are hung on walls.

Due to the operator Ma Li's attempt, a batch of rock singers, poets, and literary youths also like to buy books in the bookstore.

Ma Li himself is also a rock singer, a poet, and a radio host. His initial intention for opening the bookstore is to provide a reading place for readers who share the same interests and hobbies as him.

Though the bookstore has shrank into a shopfront from two under pressures of rising costs of house rent and electricity charge, Ma Li remains organizing some reading parties in his bookstore and introducing new books, movies, CDs to readers on the internet.

Elephant Bookstore

Elephant Bookstore(大象书店), which is located near a supermarket named 80s' and 90s' on Kunming's Cultural Lane(昆明市五华区文化巷4-6号8090超市背面), is surrounded by blocks of community buildings. It sits in a quiet valley with flourishing flowers and trees, where readers can have a nice rest.

With a cup of hot drink, readers can find literature and art books that are published in Hong Kong or Taiwan, read original painting albums that are imported from other countries, and discover classic stationery made in Europe, and handmade letter papers produced in Japan, etc.

With special interior furnishings, even a picky reader can seek out highlights of the bookstore.

A bookstore seller told the journalist that the bookstore operator aspires to design the bookstore with multiple factors, to create the bookstore as an art gallery, a salon, and a creativity boutique.

Because of the bookstore, a few artists, stylists, and "bookworms" may find their hub to communicate and exchange concepts freely.

Mandarin Bookstore

Mandarin Bookstore(漫林书苑), which is also located on Kunming's Cultural Lane near Yunnan University(云南大学附近的文化巷), has been in business for 12 years.

The bookstore has more varieties of books than Wheatfield Bookstore. Expert for selling books related to humanity and art, and fashion magazines, the bookstore also sells original editions of English novels, foreign language magazines, which seem like "rare varieties" in Kunming.

Thanks to those rare varieties of books the bookstore primarily sells, overseas students often patronize the bookstore.

Cozy decoration and exquisite way to display books on shelves have attracted a large host of regular customers.

Although the bookstore is also likely to be trapped into financial deficit, the runner of the bookstore Liu Xiaofeng announced in the public that he would keep the style of the bookstore and go ahead.

Foreign newspapers, magazines, pictorials on the shelves of the bookstore, ranging from tourism, folk custom, Chinese learning, to cooking, acupuncture, are the biggest selling point of the bookstore.

Book lovers can almost find all market best sellers they need in the bookstore.
