As a birthplace of Dian (Yunnan) culture, Guandu District of Kunming has a long history and brilliant culture of ethnic groups. A lot of historical relics are preserved in the district---- stone stele is one of the most important parts.
Yunnan's first Stone Steles Museum was built at Guandu Old Town in Kunming. The museum has a collection of stone steles that was built from the Han Dynasty (206 BC- 220 AD) to the Republic of China era (1912-1949).
The museum, covering an area of 3,700 square meters, is divided into two halls, in which ancient works of calligraphy, historical records and stone carvings are displayed. It has been open on January 22, 2013 for free.
"As the precious data of Yunnan, stone steles show wealth of information related to politics, economy, religion, education, law, science and technology in ancient time," said Bao Wenfeng, the curator of the museum of Guandu District.
It is said that more than 160 stele tablets have been excavated in Guandu District in 1982.
