Left foot dance is a traditional dance which has a history of over 1000 years. Its written records trace back to as early as 1702. Mouding county, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture is hometown of the dance. As the most widely popular and influential dance in Yi people's inhabited areas across Yunnan, it is regarded as the living fossil of Yi's culture.

Over the years, Mouding county persists in developing left foot dance culture. In 2011, it was listed by the Guinness World Records when 10,000 thousand people perform the dance at the same time.
