"Grass sea", a fantasy world near Lugu Lake

The "grass sea" means a lake teeming with grasses on a plateau. The "grass sea" scenic areas are mainly situated on the north and northeast of Lugu Lake, Yunnan Province.

Covering a land of 10 square kilometers, it is enjoying a good reputation of "museum of aquatic plants on the plateau" and "grand view garden of rare waterfowls". The water in Lugu Lake is clear.

In the morning, people boating on the lake, picking up eggs of wild ducks. Visitors can see a flock of startled birds flying from the lake.

A "walking marriage" bridge links the two banks of the lake. Most people living around Lugu Lake are Mosuo ethnic group whose sexual relationships are called “walking marriages.” These bonds are "based on mutual affection". In the daytime, young men and women express their deep attachment to each other by singing and dancing. With the emotional foundation to some extent, women invite men to visit their rooms at night and to leave the next morning.

Travel tips:

The best time to visit "grass sea" are in spring and summer. There is not much difference of the views of the four seasons. In spring, there is blossom of fruit trees along the lake, such as apple trees, pomegranate trees and pear trees. The trees are beautiful, so visitors will not feel boring at all. When it comes to May or June, the landscape there is even better. Travelers can appreciate the natural lawn in a huge area and walk on the Lovers’ Bridge. It is also the busy season at that time.

1. Walk in the scenic areas.

2. Hike.

3. Take a tram to see the lake and walk on stairs up to a big cave.

4. Try the local cuisine that traditionally features frogs, preserved pork, and lots of meat. There is local brew called Sulima that is like strong wine. It is usually offered to guests.
