Lu Jianhang(陆建航), a veteran of Flying Tigers talked about his stories in the past Duanwu Festivals.
In 1940, Lu decided to join in the army after a family party in Duanwu Festival.
Lu was born in Peking in 1926. His father was the director general of Peking Post Office at that time. In Lu's memory, his family celebrated Duanwu Festival together for only once during Anti-Japanese War. In the Duanwu Festival of 1940, Lu's father toasted at family feast with the words, "Every Chinese should try his or her best to expel Japanese invaders out of China!" After the dinner, Lu with his two brothers told his father that they would like to join in the air force and beat back Japanese bombers. Therefore, at the age of 14, Lu was admitted by flying school together with one of his brother.
In 1944, Lu spent Duanwu Festival with US soldiers.
In 1943, Lu Jianhang was sent to study in the US. After one year's hard working, Lu and his Chinese classmates were coming back to China soon. In the Duanwu Festival of 1944, these Chinese students bought some champagne and dishes. Some of them made zongzi. Seeing their celebrating activity, several US classmates joined them and spent the Chinese traditional festival together.
In 1945, "we must live on and spend Duanwu Festival together with our families."
After being back to China, Lu joined in the Flying Tigers and was in charge of hauling operations. In the Duanwu Festival of 1945, Lu carried military supplies with his comrades at Wujiaba Airport. During their rest time, Lu noticed that one of them was looking at a photo of his family. He said to his comrade, " don't worry. The war is being ended soon. I believe we will spend Duanwu Festival with our own families in the next year." At that night, although there was no zongzi, all of his comrades greeted each other and the words they said the most was "we must live on and spend Duanwu Festival together with our families."
In 2012, Duanwu Festival is quite lively because of his neighbors.
After Anti-Japanese War, Lu became a teacher and spent Duanwu Festival with his family or friends every year. Since his wife passed away, he moved to a seniors' home. As Duanwu was coming, all the seniors of West Renmin Road Community were invited to celebrate the festival together. "Growing older and older, I should enjoy the last countable days. Maybe I have been the last Flying Tiger veteran who live in Kunming now and I must live well. I hope to spend every Duanwu Festival together with these old friends in the following years." said Lu Jianhang. (Editors: Annie Kwok, Minnie Mao)
